In order to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other age related disorders, you need to keep your body fit and healthy. Regular exercise is essential for every part of your body. Increasing your heart rate and breathing ensures a steady oxygen supply to all of your body, including your brain.

The best way to prevent memory loss is to keep using your mind. Regular exercise is not just for your body. Try crossword puzzles or Sudoku. Read every day, even if it’s just the paper, it is stimulating your mind.

Another way of stimulating your mind is to keep interested in current events. Keep up with the local neighbourhood news by reading the local newspaper. Become involved with local groups. There are senior citizens clubs, township groups, local schools or church volunteer groups and you can always find a housebound, older neighbour that would appreciate a visitor. Sports clubs have supporters groups and you could sign up on the internet for whatever subject takes your interest.

Nutrition is essential to an active, healthy mind. Sometimes people believe they have Alzheimer’s disease when it is a nutritional deficiency. As our bodies age, sometimes they are less efficient at using the vitamins in our food. Check regularly with your doctor for tests and if you are low in any element, your doctor will be able to prescribe a vitamin supplement.

Stress aggravates many health problems, including Alzheimer’s disease. Try to avoid stress, especially long-term stress. Take a little time each day to unwind with some Meditation, yoga, tai chi or just some quiet time is important for your health.

Keep in regular contact with family and friends. Learn to use the internet and make some time each day to keep up with family. The feeling of being involved and a part of our lives is a great encouragement for everyone, not just older family members.

Keep fit, eat well, sleep well and stay interested in life and you will be doing everything possible to avoid Alzheimer’s disease.

There is a lot of things most people take for granted e.g., the government controls the amount of dangerous chemicals in toiletries and make-up. This is not possible, given the amount of new chemicals and combinations of chemicals developed every year. We need to take a proactive approach and look out for ourselves.

The onion is a plant that is familiar for its pungent taste and scent. This scent evaporates into the air if onions are peeled, chopped or grated causing tears to flow by affecting the nerves in the nose which are connected with the eyes. The onion has valuable nutritional qualities though it may not be rich in energy value.

The onion is a natural remedy. It is antiseptic, diuretic, helpful in digestion, a stimulant for the respiratory system, beneficial to hypertension, and so on. The onion also constitutes one of the most effective natural remedies for high cholesterol levels. It helps by increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Half a raw onion, or its crushed equivalent, increases HDL by 30% for most individuals who suffer from cardiopathy or high cholesterol. Moreover, it is a substance which attributes to the prevention of cancer. Onion has proven to help decrease the risk of stomach and ovary cancer by 20%.

Cooking onion makes them more edible and digestible and tends to get rid of their scent. However, the more onion is cooked, the more it loses its effect. If the consumption of raw onion is unbearable, even a lesser quantity will prove beneficial.

In order to rid of any unpleasant breath odor after eating onion, one may try chewing parsley. However, foul breath is a small price to pay when one takes into account the fact that preventive therapy with the use of onion is approximately 70% successful. So chew some parsley, gum, brush your teeth and use mouthwash. These should eliminate the breath odor while you reap the benefits of reducing your high cholesterol.

We spend a lot of money every year on trying to make ourselves look better. The combined size of the beauty, fashion, fitness and cosmetic surgery industries attests to this. But what if you could do it for free? Check out these secret weapons.

Sleep

“To me, one of the greatest cosmetics of all is eight hours sleep,” says Paula Goodyer, Walkley Award-winning health writer and author of Fit & Firm For Ever (Random House). “Yet it’s so underrated in terms of how we look and feel.”

Unfortunately, it’s also under attack in a world where the lights and the Internet always seem to be on. While there is allowance for genetic variation, the consensus from experts is that adults need somewhere between 7.5 and 8.5 hours sleep a night. A 2007 MBF Healthwatch survey of 1200 people found that 51 percent of them weren’t getting enough sleep.

“A lot of research now links chronic sleep deprivation to an increased risk of weight gain and diabetes,” Goodyer says.

Drink less alcohol

“I put alcohol under the heading of a ’shape stealer’,” Goodyer says. “A lot of us drink more than we need to drink, resulting in lots of empty kilojoules that end up around your waist.”

Bonus: drinking less saves you money.

Eat healthier foods

Your fridge, pantry and fruit bowl are full of secret weapons. Not only does so much of how you look come down to what you eat, but your home is full of ingredients for fabulous beauty potions.

First, your diet. We all know that a diet high in processed foods, cakes and soft drinks will make your waistline swell. But did you know that it could make you look old as well? In 2001, researchers from Monash University studied the diets of 453 senior citizens from Australia, Greece and Sweden.

“What the study found was that those who ate the stuff we’re meant to eat — vegetables, fruit, legumes, fish etc — had a lot fewer wrinkles that people that a diet that was high in processed foods,” Goodyer says. “For the sake of your skin as well as your waistline, eat those foods.”

DIY beauty products

More from the fridge. While cucumber slices on your eyes and lemon rinse in your hair might seem old-fashioned, the truth is that homemade beauty potions do work.

“Your fridge, pantry and fruit bowl are great places to raid for DIY beauty products,” says Nikki Yazxhi, freelance beauty writer and blogger at Bella Mumma. “They key is to whip them up and use them straightaway, so you’re not worried about waste, storage and use-by dates.”

And you don’t need exotic ingredients — mix two tablespoons of almond meal with one tablespoon of Manuka honey to make a gentle hydrating exfoliator, or mash half an avocado with a tablespoon of full cream natural yoghurt to apply to your face and neck for a 10-minute moisturising mask.

When it comes to cosmetics, it might simply be a matter of making more of what you have. “You don’t need 1000 different products — you can double up and make your make-up work overtime,” Yazxhi says. She suggests blending lipstick on well-moisturised cheeks to create a sheer blush, using lip gloss as a highlighter for your cheeks and eyes, and rubbing lip balm into your nails to nourish and soften the cuticles.

Get back to basics

“We need to give ourselves a serious reality check,” Goodyer says. “While a spa treatment might make you feel good for a little while, you could invest that money in three sessions with a good personal trainer who will get you on the road to getting fit and looking better on your own.”

It seems that we’ve forgotten the benefits of free exercise. Walking, cycling, playing ball games — these are all things that will help us to look better for nothing. “Motivation is often the problem, and often what we’re paying the gym for, but if you enlist a friend to walk with you, you can get that for free as well,” Goodyer says.

All people have different motivations to exercise. But the most important reason why you should start an exercise program is for your own personal health. Fitness can be measured in different ways and being healthy is one them. There are simple steps one can take to increase their life span by decreasing their risk for heart disease and other ailments. Heart disease is the number one killer of people in the world. Many peoples lives have been ended prematurely because they didn’t follow a few simple rules.

Eating fish 2 times a week could end up giving you years of extra life. Not everyone likes fish so good thing they fish oil pills. Fish or fish oil contain omega 3 fatty acids which are good for the heart. I would recommend eating fish over taking pills for many reasons. The pills are 2nd best to the natural substance because they made from extracting the oils from the fish. Reason number two is that fish contains high amounts of protein and very low fat. Americans have a difficult time eating enough protein while keeping fat consumption low. If you enjoy fish I would say to eat it 4 times a week but if you are like me and hate fish make sure you eat it at least twice a week. If you can’t stomach it, just take the pills because they do work well just not as good as the real thing.

The following are more ways that exercising can improve your health. Exercise can also help your cholesterol. Cardio increases the amount of good cholesterol in your body which will help transport the LDL (bad cholesterol) away from tissues and organs. Exercising for health is just as important as your diet. You need to do at least 20 minutes of cardio 5 days a week to keep from being sedentary. High density lipoproteins are produced in your body when you exercise and the higher the HDL the lower your risk for heart disease. HDL actually counts a negative risk factor for heart disease, meaning that if you have an HDL level over 40 you can subtract one of the risk factors that would put you at risk. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease and sedentary lifestyle.

Cholesterol falls into the category of the lipids (fats) carried by the blood system. For the purposes of precision, we are talking about small amounts of steroids responsible for the breakdown of the fatty particles that circulate around the blood system. Cholesterol participates in the make-up of the cell membranes and the synthesis of some hormones. About 80 percent of the cholesterol is contained in the brain cells. In short, cholesterol is essential for staying perfectly fit.

The blood carries 2 mg of cholesterol every day. One third of the amount enters with the food while the rest is synthesized by the body. Doctors consider that high cholesterol endangers the heart and the blood vessels. The paradox is that we have to fight cholesterol when we vitally need it.

In reality, cholesterol is a changeable substance. We differentiate between healthy and bad cholesterol. We will talk about the friendly type in another article. Here, we examine bad cholesterol as an enemy that enters our body with fatty foods. The doctors are well aware of the link between bad cholesterol and one of the leading diseases worldwide: ischemia of the heart.

How can we foresee the danger of amassing large amounts of cholesterol in the blood? Does cholesterol lower naturally? What are the cholesterol normal levels? First of all, these questions are vital for our life. Both, cholesterol treatment and weight treatment aim to safeguard our health.

The current level of cholesterol allows us to foresee the future dangers to our heart and blood vessels. We can predict them with 70% precision. Consider the case of a 20 year old man with cholesterol level of 12 mmol/l (the average cholesterol level is 5.2 mmol/l). If this man doesn`t take measures, he will greatly increase the chances of getting a heart attack in his early 30s.

Many people ask whether cholesterol is dangerous but few know the answer. Well, cholesterol travels in the blood in the form of large molecules related to the proteins. Modern medicine refers to them as lipoproteins. In their constitution, cholesterol has a low density that results in easy amassing of cholesterol on the walls of the blood vessels.

Doctors claim that they can find cholesterol in the blood system of 15 year old teens. The amount grows in time while the passable area of the vessels shrinks. In the event of inflammatory processes on the vessel walls, the cholesterol plaques can rupture. Then, a blood clot may develop on their place. If the blood clot tears apart, it will travel through the main arteries. This can be a life threatening condition.

The body needs 300 mg of cholesterol per day. Our daily food supplies 400 mg. So, we see that it is vital to eat healthily. We have to start asking the following questions. What is the percentage of fats in the cheese I am about to buy? What is the level of cholesterol in my blood?

With aging, we have to exclude the fatty meats from our daily diet. Large amounts of cholesterol are contained in the caviar, salami, butter, and many others foods. Many enthusiasts fight cholesterol with a meat-free diet. This is one of the ways to get normal levels of cholesterol.

Here comes our second option. Arteriosclerosis is virtually lacking in many Third World countries. We know that their citizens consume mainly rice and vegetables. Follow the lead!

Many times, eating habits are difficult to change. However, we should be aware of the cholesterol risks. We have to do our best to eat healthily. Weight treatment in any form is a matter of health. By the same token, when we eliminate weight excess and reach our good weight, we reduce bad cholesterol and embrace health!

Every human being is having a normal blood pressure of 120/80 mm of Hg. If it suddenly falls down, the condition we termed as Shock. Again, if it remarkably goes above the normal range, the condition is termed as hypertensive. When the pressure of blood is very high heart has to work more to pump out blood, which leads to Myocardial Infarction and on later stage heart failure can happen. Even cerebral hemorrhage, renal failure and damage to optical nerves can also happen.

We can define blood pressure as follows–lateral pressure exerted by blood on the blood vessel walls is called Blood Pressure. When it goes little below the normal level is called Low normal blood pressure, and when pressure goes just above the normal level is called High normal blood pressure. High normal blood pressure can be controlled by life style modification.

Hyper tension can be classified as Mild to moderate Hypertension, which can be controlled by medications. Another category is Severe Hypertension, which can cause damage to the vital organs of body.

Causes for Hypertension : Hypertension can occur due to anxiety, stress, eating wrong stuffs, lack of exercise, obesity, too much caffeine intake, smoking and not getting enough sleep.

Organs affected by hypertension: Brain, Heart, Kidneys and eyes are the vital organs which are mostly get affected by hypertension.

Food during Hypertension: When hypertension is diagnosed it is always advisable to take precautions while taking the food. We should take high fibre diet like, oatbran, apple pectin, psyllium seeds, and gaurgum. High fibre diet also helps to reduce cholesterol levels. Secondly, patient should reduce intake of table salt and increase Potassium intake. Vegetables like celery, garlic, onion, tomato, broccoli, carrot, and saffron are having good effect during hypertension. Spices like fennel, oregano, black pepper, basil, tarragon are suggested to add during cooking.

Role of Exercise during Hypertension: Apart from maintaining healthy diet, one should practise Pranayam (breathing exercise ) and meditation daily for 1 hour.

Medications: Varieties of medicines are available in market to control hypertension. Some of them are –
ACE Inhibitor : Angiotensin converting Enzyme (ACE ) inhibits the conversion of Angiotensin II from Angiotensin I. Angiotensin II enzyme encourage vasoconstriction which leads to rise in blood pressure. Again Angiotensin II enzyme helps in sodium and water retention, which again increases blood volume and leads to high blood pressure.

Angiontensin Antagonist: It prevents the action of Angiotensin II enzyme on the target cell.

Calcium Channel Blocker: Release of calciumions from intracellular store causes contraction. Calcium channel blocker blocks the inward calcium ions movement, which trigger calcium ions release from intracellular store.

Nitrates: It dilates coronary vessels, counteracting against coronary spasm and supply blood to ischemic area.

Alpha Blocker: By blocking alpha receptor blood pressure will fall.

Beta Blocker: By blocking beta1 receptor total peripheral resistance will fall and thus systolic and diastolic pressure will fall.

Diuretics: It helps in the excretion of excess water from the body and thus blood volume will reduce which leads to fall in blood pressure. Above medication information is given to enhance the knowledge of an individual. It is always advisable to consult with your physician before taking any medication.

So we can conclude that, if we maintaining proper diet, lifestyle, medications and regular health checkup we can lead a healthy life even after being an hypertensive.
